The basic reproduction number R0 and effectiveness of reactive interventions during dengue epidemics: the 2002 dengue outbreak in Easter Island, Chile.

We use a stochastic simulation model to explore the effect of reactive intervention strategies during the 2002 dengue outbreak in the small population of Easter Island, Chile. We quantified the effect of interventions on the transmission dynamics and epidemic size as a function of the simulated control intensity levels and the timing of initiation of control interventions. Because no dengue out...

Emergence of Zika Virus Infection

Zika virus is an arbovirus in the family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus related to dengue virus (DENV), yellow fever, West Nile virus (WNV) and Japanese encephalitis viruses. ZIKV was iso¬lated for the first time in 1947 from a rhesus monkey in the Zika forest of Uganda [1]. The virus caused only sporadic infection and human cases were reported from the 1960s in Asia and Africa, typically accom...

Zika Virus: a re-emerging pathogen with rapidly evolving public health implications.

History of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection ZIKV is an enveloped, arthropod-borne (arbovirus) virus characterized by a single positive-stranded RNA genome. ZIKV was firstly isolated in 1948 from a sentinel monkey that was monitored for the infection by Yellow fever virus in the Zika forest of Uganda (Dick et al., 1952). The virus belongs to the family of Flaviviridae and it is closely related to oth...

Coexistence of two dengue virus serotypes and forecasting for Madeira island

The first outbreak of dengue occurred in Madeira Island on 2012, featuring one virus serotype. Aedes aegypti was the vector of the disease and it is unlikely that it will be eliminated from the island. Therefore, a new outbreak of dengue fever can occur and, if it happens, risk to the population increases if two serotypes coexist. In this paper, mathematical modeling and numerical simulations a...

Serological and entomological investigations of an outbreak of dengue fever in certain rural areas of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES During the first week of July 2003, suspected cases of dengue fever were reported from three villages in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. Since the fever outbreak occurred for the first time in these villages, serological, virological and entomological investigations were carried out to confirm the aetiology of outbreak. METHODS A total of 76 plasma samples were c...
